Asus G53sx-s1208 review

Just bought this unit recently... well, i am not really a hardcore gamer... i just like the performance it will hav and the design is not bad, well, sth different than other laptops.. i did not choose alienware M14x coz , well, it is under dell, and recently(starting at the beginning of the year, it seems that dell computers had a lot of hardware problems and i read a lot of review saying that their customer support service is not that good anymore.. so in the end i decided to go for this..

Specs:
Core i7 2670QM
4GB DDR3
2 X 500GB Sata 5400RPM
15.6 full HD LED backlit.. Matte screen(anti reflective)
GTX560M 2GB VRAM DDR5
DVD drive
Windows 7 premium 64bit

BACK VENTS:

Well, i am sure u, readers already know about the twin vents at the back of the laptop... there slightly bigger than other laptop's vents.. not very big also.. slightly bigger.. and they actually does not giv out, in my opinion, no sound at all.. but if u put ur ear near the vents, then u will hear it.. but i am sure the fan is running... in an aircond room, if u use it to browse internet, it wont get hot.. it gives out, quite cool air actually for the CPU vents..... but the GPU vents may give out slightly warm air...

but if u play games or encoding videos or movies, it does get hot... but maybe slightly less hotter than an acer laptop that always get heat up easily.. in my 2-day experience wit the laptop so far, i think the fan wont/does not run to a very high speed even if the computer is running games... .. the keyboard area remains cool... no matter what..one vent is for the CPU and another is for GPU... the keyboard on the GPU side(right) get a little bit warmer when u play intense game.. it is not noticeable though...

SCREEN
i got the unit with FUll HD and matte display(non-reflective). Honestly, i don like it.. i prefer HD display.. coz the higher the resolution, everything will appear smaller.. in fact, i actually use the windows 7 tools to magnify all the user interface by 150%!! i think there is no benefit in getting full hd.. HD is sufficient enough... well, don blame me if u make the wrong choice though.. :D
plus, when u run games in FUll HD resolution, it requires more power from the GPU than running games in a HD resolution... as a result, the frame rates will definitely be lower...
u can change the resolution of the comp, but no matter what resolution, they wont be clear..

Speakers:
Since there is no sub-woofer, the speaker is sufficient for any light entertainment.. no bass at all.. volume is just OK... not very loud, not very soft... of course it is recommend that u purchase a separate good set of headphones, earphones or speakers... there is a THX software on the system... yea, it seem to improve to any audio output device ... i cant really find the EAX 5.0 thingy.............

Keyboard:
the keyboard is back-light... the keys are ok.. its soft... they keyboard does not really flex.. if u wan it to flex though, u may need some force... well, wit usual daily typing, i think u will barely notice any flex.. in fact, i do not notice it at all... the track-pad is like any other 14inch laptop size... MAYBE slightly bigger.. the buttons are horrible... it requires some force and when u press it, it does giv out quite a loud and disturbing sound... the laptop lights can be switch on and off and adjust the brightness to 3 levels...

Laptop exterior
the laptop is heavy and quite huge... it definitely feels quite bulky to bring around... and u will leave marks, or signs on the exterior case of the laptop if ur hand gets sweaty easily... u can wipe it, but it cant be rub off 100%... the exterior is rubberized and makes it feel very soft when touched...

webcam:
webcam quality is the same as any other laptop...

CPU AND GPU..

well, honestly, i have not really explore their potential... well, the GPU usually stays at around 42celcius in an air-conditioned room and 47 Celsius in a non- air conditioned room.. CPU usually stays around 41-45 Celsius...when using it to browse the internet or any other light task..
the dvd writer surprisingly does not make a lot of noise when running a disc... the battery is actually heavier than the power cord... the power cord does looks big but not really heavy...

my laptop comes wit a bag and a gaming mouse... the bag MAY fit the laptop just enough...

the mouse is not really high quality gaming mouse.. i think... coz if u look around the mouse, the mouse is not really well built... it does not really look like it is made of premium quality material... i've not yet use it though...

Feel free to ask any ques, and i will try to answer them :D

  2. Bro, can it play bluray discs?

  3. rawsugar: well, the GPU will hav to work harder to, let say achieve 30fps for a particular game in full HD than in HD resolution rite? for movies, well, honestly, i think full hd is clearer... provided that u play a full HD video... for the gra[hics performance, i just tell u, don expect too much.. :)
well, coz it is a notebook GPU... and it may be less powerful than a DESKTOP GPU of maybe, let say, RM700 GPU card... well, this is all bcoz, notebook's power is limited.. which is totally different than a desktop that can supply power up to 1000watt or more... IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN, this laptop or any other gaming laptop, usually the max power supply for it is only up to 130 watt...

Samzx: my model, cant... well my moedl is RM3999... the model (15.6inch) priced at RM5299 ], can watch blu-ray,,, :)

    1. So far, no... :) coz i not yet use it gaming for a long period... well, usually, i use it for gaming not more than 2 hours... the reason is bcoz, i get headache when playing FPS.. :P
well, if u r in an aircond room when gaming for about 2 hours already, the GPU temp will be around 72-76 degree Celsius... as for CPU, it will rise up to lower than 80 degree celcius when u use it to convert videos... when gaming, it usually rises only up till 60++ degree Celsius..
well, dunno u call that overheating or not... but for me, overheating is over 85 degree celcius..
      cheers.. :D

  6. can... but it will not be clear... it will be quite blurr... well for me, it is quite bad... that's why i use FHD... well, if u mean comparing FHD wit HD when gaming, yea... it definitely will make a difference... maybe by 8-15FPS... well, that is my personal opinion... :D

  11. how long is the battery life?

    ReplyDelete
  12. erm... under battery saving mode, maybe can reach up to 2 hours... with very light internet usage... like facebooking or type documents..... if u use it under entertainment mode, can more than 1 hour but less than 2 hours... when under battery saving mode, the CPU wont Turbo boost...

  16. Bro .. want to ask .. have u tried running Battlefield 3 ? My 1st and only intention to get this model because i do not need Blu-Ray and i only use this to play BF3 and nothing else, and will convert to SSD128GB.

Can it be upgraded to dual 4GB RAM ?

    Thanks in advance ...

    1. yea... but only like till high setting ... not extreme setting... at extreme the FPS is like 20++fps... for high setting is like more than 40fps...
      yeah, i think can upgrade...

but FYI, the new model is out... G54s <-if i am not mistaken of the model name... maybe u should consider that... :)

but i think the g53sx is still available... i THINK... haha but i think u should/can consider the newer model... coz it is thinner... i am not sure of the weight... and it is using Ivy Bridge.... BUT i heard that it has a little bit of heat issue... i am not sure that applies to a ivy bridge CPU or all the ivy bridge CPU... i really am not sure... :)

  19. hey bro, I also have the same model since last February. So far, I am satisfied with it. The thing is, the HDD is kind of slow. feel like upgrading it to SSD. Samsung 830 series maybe. but did you know whether this laptop support the SSD. and did it support SATA 3?
